My Musical Journey: From Childhood to Professional Tabla Player

By Gajraj Mohini

Music has been the heartbeat of my life since I was just 2.5 years old. Under the loving guidance of my father, I took my first steps into the enchanting world of tabla.

The Early Years

Learning tabla at such a young age was both challenging and magical. My small hands could barely reach across the tabla, but my father's patience and encouragement kept me going. Every day was a new discovery - learning to produce different sounds, understanding rhythm patterns, and developing the muscle memory that would become second nature.

Learning from the Masters

My journey took a significant turn when I had the privilege of learning under Late Shri Khageswar Ojha. His teachings went beyond technique; he taught me the soul of tabla playing. The discipline, the dedication, and the deep respect for the instrument that he instilled in me continue to guide my practice today.

Currently, I continue my learning under the guidance of Pt. Kulamani Sahoo, whose expertise and wisdom have helped me reach new heights in my musical journey.

Sharing the Gift

Today, I'm not just a performer but also an educator. Through my performances and educational content, I share the beauty of tabla with a growing community of music lovers. Each performance is an opportunity to connect with audiences and share the rich tradition of Indian classical music.

The journey continues, and every day brings new learning, new challenges, and new opportunities to grow as both a musician and a person.
